What Makes Me Laugh

Humor is defined as the quality of being amusing or comic, especially as expressed in literature or speech. So what do I find amusing or comedic. I think I find things that are unexpected or sometimes dark to be funny. Humor comes at one’s expense, so I think that some stuff is funny that others might find offensive. One specific instance of this is when I was walking with my friend from the U of M football game and he slipped on the ice. He completely ate the sidewalk and I was in tears from laughter. After several minutes of amusement, I finally composed myself and asked how he was. With a nervous look on his face, he said “that really hurt”. Something about how he said it was so funny to me and I went right back to laughing. I believe that this sense of humor came from my childhood and my friends. Ignorance vs Knowledge

Ignorance is bliss. Right? But knowledge is power. Well which one is it? In society today, I think that people believe that everything they know to be true is the whole truth and everything else is wrong. When people are presented with a somewhat opposing viewpoint, they often are quick to dismiss it and say that the other viewpoint is wrong when they could both be correct. When someone is presented with information that contradicts what they believe to be true, they will often go look deeper into the information even if there was enough evidence to prove it, without them finding out first hand.  This nature is evident in Oedipus Rex as Oedipus is equipped with great suspicion that Jocasta may be his birth mother. Instead of accepting this as what it is or denying it completely, Oedipus takes extensive measures to find out for himself.
