All Stories Are The Same?

Are all stories the same basic foundation with small variations but the same main idea? To answer that we need a clear definition of what a story is. A stor y is  an account of imaginary or real people and events told for entertainment. Okay, so a story, by definition, is told specifically for entertainment. Then what if there are only 6 main arcs that people find entertaining. Then yes, all stories are basically the same because they all end in entertainment and only specific things can lead to entertainment. If I were to film a movie of me sitting in my room watching a wall of paint dry and then once the paint is fully dried, the movie ends. Is this a story? It doesn't really follow the same plot structures as other stories. Would this be considered a new storyline and a completely new story. Well, no, it wasn't entertaining so it doesn't count as a story. Okay, well entertainment is subjective, so let's say there was someone who genuinely found this interesting. The...

The Stranger: Line Analysis

“He hasn't said anything yet. It'd be pretty lousy to shoot him like that."  This is said by Meursault to Raymond talking about the Arab. For Meursault to realize this and say it to Raymond but then go and shoot the Arab not much later says a lot about Meursault. Meursault shoots the Arab for seemingly no good reason. The Arab didn’t say anything, Meursault was just annoyed by the heat and the light reflecting off the Arab’s knife. To shoot him for this shows that Meursault might not value the consequences of his actions and doesn’t recognize the magnitude of what he had just done, at first. But, this quote shows that he does recognize the power of shooting someone. Maybe that’s because he wasn’t hot and annoyed at that point, so whenever something inconveniences Meursault he doesn’t hold the same values. Meursault seems to be a character who doesn’t care about much or have opinions about anything, but he did have an opinion about shooting him before saying anything. How...

Little Miss Sunshine: Catharsis

A profound moment for me in Little Miss Sunshine was when Dwayne found out he couldn't be a pilot because he's colorblind. To hear him speak for the first time, with all the expletives, proved how passionate he was about this goal. For him to not be able to pursue his dreams because of something he cannot control was very interesting to watch. That probably evoked the most emotion out of me. Dwayne was so committed to his dream of becoming a pilot that he took a vow of silence for months. This commitment is extremely admirable. As a more of a pessimistic and dark character, the passion for becoming a pilot that Dwayne had was heightened. However, instead of extending this scene out, they quickly got back on the bus and went to Little Miss Sunshine. This sort of abrupt display of a tragic event for Dwayne was sort of dark humor in a way. They were so quick to move on from this topic and Dwayne seemed as if nothing happened when they were at the event. When the whole ...

Satire

Throughout the past month I have written countless essays (another one right now if you count this). And honestly, I think I might be the best writer Troy High has to offer. I've written on prompts ranging from Voltaire's Candide  to sneakers to dark humor. As I have covered a wide range of topics, I feel as though I'd be able to write about anything, maybe even professionally. It's not like I've been writing my entire life either, I've only been writing like this for the past month. My writing... better yet, my art has been able to resonate with every person that has been lucky enough to come across it. If I wasn't so good at other things, I'd definitely be able to make a living off my works. Kyle Jung, awarded The Nobel Prize in Literature for his outstanding piece about Chance the Rapper in his college application, has been able to inspire the next generation of writers. Along with this inspiration, however, it seems as though this generation of ...
